Overview
The Singing Short Sword is the Bard's epic weapon and one of the most iconic items in EverQuest. The quest spans multiple continents and expansions, requiring you to craft a Mahogany Lute, kill Trakanon in Old Sebilis, defeat Eldrig the Old in Burning Woods, and confront a corrupted dragon before the final reward. The weapon itself procs Verse of Vesshan, a powerful single-target slow.
This quest is largely soloable by a skilled bard at appropriate levels, though several boss encounters are easiest with a small group. Key bard tricks — charm kiting, chant kiting, and charm pulling — make this quest far more accessible than most class epics.
Reward
- Singing Short Sword — 10/22 ratio, Effect: Verse of Vesshan (single-target slow on proc), Bard only
Phase 1: Crafting the Mahogany Lute
The quest begins with crafting a Mahogany Lute. This requires collecting several components and using the Fletching tradeskill.
Mahogany Lute Components
▶Phinigel Autropos is the boss of Kedge Keep, an underwater dungeon off the coast of Faydwer. He drops the Mahogany Lute Head. Phinigel is a reasonably accessible raid target and can be brought to very low health with a small group. Bring Water Breathing potions or spells — the entire zone is underwater.
Bard tip: A bard can solo Phinigel using charm kiting with the fishmen in the zone, though this requires care given the underwater environment and Phinigel's AE spells.
Seafury Cyclopes spawn on the Cyclops Island in Ocean of Tears and drop the Mahogany Lute String. The island is also where you will later need to complete the Quag Maelstrom step, so scout the area early.
Bard tip: Charm a seafury cyclops and use it to kill the others — this is fast and efficient solo farming.
A High Quality Lute String can be purchased from instrument merchants in Freeport, Felwithe, or other cities. Check the bard guild merchants first.
Place the Mahogany Lute Head, Mahogany Lute String, High Quality Lute String, and a Block of Mahogany Wood into a Fletching Kit. Combine them to produce the Mahogany Lute. No tradeskill level is required — this is a trivial combine.
Phase 2: Trakanon's Tooth
You must kill Trakanon in Old Sebilis and loot his remains for a component. This requires the Sebilite Key to enter the dungeon.
Killing Trakanon and Looting His Remains
▶You need the Sebilite Key to enter Old Sebilis via the zone-in in Trakanon's Teeth. See the Seb Key guide for full details on obtaining it.
Trakanon resides in the southeastern portion of Old Sebilis past several locked doors. Keys to the inner rooms drop from boss NPCs within Sebilis (Arch Duke Rixiz and others). You will need to work through the dungeon progressively or have a keyed group.
Trakanon is a powerful raid boss. He casts AE spells, has a nasty rampage, and is venomous — bards are especially vulnerable to his disease-based attacks. Bring a full raid group or a competent smaller force with sufficient healers and tanks. He always drops Trakanon's Tooth which is needed for multiple class epics.
Note: Trakanon also drops pieces used in other class epic quests (Necromancer, Shaman, etc.). Coordinate with your guild on loot distribution.
Phase 3: Eldrig the Old and the Burning Woods Dragon
Two dragon encounters in Burning Woods are required. Eldrig the Old drops a key component, and a corrupted dragon spawned during the quest must also be defeated.
Eldrig the Old
▶Eldrig the Old is a named drake in Burning Woods. He roams the zone and has a relatively long respawn timer. He drops the Maestro's Symphony Page 24 Top and other epic components. Eldrig hits hard for a non-raid mob.
Bard tip: Eldrig can be soloed via charm kiting. Charm one of the numerous drakes in Burning Woods and use it to whittle Eldrig down. Be cautious of charm breaks. This method is significantly safer than fighting Eldrig directly.
This page is a No Drop component needed later in the quest. Keep it safe.
The Burning Woods Dragon (Corrupted Version)
▶Baldric Slezar is an NPC in Burning Woods connected to the bard epic quest chain. Interacting with him at the right point in the quest triggers the appearance of a powerful corrupted dragon. Have your group ready before initiating this encounter.
The corrupted dragon is a challenging encounter. It drops Maestro's Symphony Page 24 Bottom, the companion piece to the top page from Eldrig.
Bard tip: Chant kiting (using damage songs while running) is an effective strategy for this encounter for a skilled bard. Keep your distance, maintain your damage songs, and use selo's for movement speed.
Phase 4: Quag Maelstrom on Cyclops Island
The penultimate boss of the quest is Quag Maelstrom, who spawns on Cyclops Island in Ocean of Tears. He is a powerful NPC requiring careful tactics.
Spawning and Defeating Quag Maelstrom
▶Ocean of Tears is accessible from East Freeport. Cyclops Island is in the southern portion of the zone. Seafury cyclopes and the named cyclops Quag Maelstrom are found here. You will need a boat, levitation, or Spirit of Eagle to reach the island safely.
Quag Maelstrom is a powerful named cyclops on the island. He can be difficult to kill without assistance from the other cyclopes on the island.
Bard tip: Charm a seafury cyclops and use it to fight Quag. This is the most effective solo strategy. Charmed seafury cyclopes hit very hard and can bring Quag down quickly. Watch your charm duration and be ready to re-charm or run if it breaks at an inopportune time.
Phase 5: Assembly and Final Turn-in
With all components in hand, the final steps involve assembling the Mystical Lute and completing the turn-in with Vinas Earthtone in West Freeport.
Final Assembly
▶Combine the two page halves to create the complete Maestro's Symphony Page 24.
The complete set of Maestro's Symphony pages is required. Most pages drop from various named mobs across Norrath. Pages 1–24 must all be assembled before the final turn-in. Several pages drop in Kedge Keep, Old Sebilis, and other high-level zones. Consult a full page list for all locations.
Combine all 24 assembled pages with the Mahogany Lute in the combining device to create the Mystical Lute. This is the penultimate item in the chain.
Vinas Earthtone is located in the Bard Guild in West Freeport. Hand over the Mystical Lute and Trakanon's Tooth simultaneously. He will reward you with the Singing Short Sword. Congratulations — your epic is complete.
Bard-Specific Tips
- Charm kiting Eldrig: Use Chant of Battle or a direct-damage song to charm a nearby drake, then let it attack Eldrig. Re-charm as needed. Staying mobile keeps you safe from Eldrig's melee.
- Chant kiting the BW dragon: Keep running while cycling through damage songs. Selo's Accelerating Chorus is essential. Don't let the mob catch you — Burning Woods has plenty of open space.
- Charm seafury for Quag: Seafury cyclopes deal tremendous damage. A charmed seafury will tear through Quag quickly. Have a re-charm attempt ready and be prepared to run if charm drops.
- Phinigel in Kedge Keep: Bring a Water Breathing item or spell. You can charm the fishmen for assistance. Phinigel's AE Stun can be disruptive — keep distance and use the terrain to your advantage.
- Page farming: Some pages are rare drops. Consider advertising your epic status in general chat — other players who already have their epic often help or donate spare pages.
