Overview
The Coldain Prayer Shawl is an eight-stage quest in Velious, centered on the Coldain dwarves of Thurgadin. Each stage upgrades the shawl with better stats. The final 8th Shawl is among the best cloak-slot items available in the Velious era, featuring high stats and a powerful clicky effect.
The progression requires increasingly difficult tradeskill combines, faction with the Coldain, and fighting powerful mobs across Velious. Tradeskill levels of at least 200+ (in relevant skills) are recommended before attempting later stages. Most stages involve combining items in a Coldain Shawl Kit provided by an NPC in Thurgadin.
Key NPCs
- Lorekeeper Grenwald — Thurgadin; provides the Shawl Kits and manages the turn-in for each stage
- Seneschal Aldikar — Thurgadin; involved in later shawl stages
- Various Coldain citizens — quest dialogue and intermediate turn-ins throughout Thurgadin
Tradeskill Requirements Summary
- Baking — required for stages 2–3
- Brewing — required for stages 3–4
- Tailoring — required for stages 4–5
- Pottery — required for stage 5
- Blacksmithing — required for stages 6–7
- Jewelcrafting — required for stage 7–8
- Higher skill reduces failure chance. For stages 6–8, aim for 200+ in the relevant skill.
Shawl Progression
1st Shawl — Prayer Shawl of the Underfoot
▶The first shawl is obtained by speaking with Lorekeeper Grenwald in Thurgadin and requesting to begin the prayer shawl quest. He provides the initial shawl as a simple introduction.
This is the starting point of the quest chain. Grenwald provides the first shawl and explains the progression. No combat or tradeskill work is required at this stage — it is simply an initiation into the quest.
2nd Shawl — Coldain Prayer Shawl
▶The second stage requires a Baking combine. You must bake a Coldain Spirit Bread and place it along with the 1st shawl into the Shawl Kit provided by Grenwald.
Ingredients are available from vendors in Thurgadin. The Baking trivial is low — most characters can succeed without significant investment in the skill.
Place both items into the Coldain Shawl Kit from Grenwald and combine to receive the 2nd Coldain Prayer Shawl.
3rd Shawl — Coldain Prayer Shawl
▶Stage three involves both Baking and Brewing. You must bake a loaf and brew a beverage, then combine both along with the 2nd shawl.
Both combines use ingredients available in Thurgadin. Trivials are still modest at this stage.
Place the 2nd shawl and both crafted food items into the Shawl Kit to receive the 3rd Coldain Prayer Shawl.
4th Shawl — Coldain Prayer Shawl
▶Stage four requires a Tailoring combine. You must craft a piece of Coldain-style clothing or textile and combine it with the 3rd shawl.
Snow cougar pelts and coldain woolens are commonly used. These drop from creatures around Eastern Wastes and the Great Divide.
Aim for Tailoring 100+ for this stage to reduce failure chance. Combine the tailored item and 3rd shawl in the Shawl Kit.
5th Shawl — Coldain Prayer Shawl
▶Stage five incorporates Pottery. You must create a ceramic prayer tile or vessel and combine it with the 4th shawl.
The pottery wheel and kiln are available in Thurgadin. Materials can be purchased locally. Pottery 100+ recommended.
Place both items in the Shawl Kit. The 5th shawl marks the halfway point of the progression.
6th Shawl — Coldain Prayer Shawl
▶Stage six requires Blacksmithing and begins to involve more significant combat. You must smith a Coldain metal component and obtain drops from Velious enemies.
Metals such as velium ore are found in the Wakening Land and Crystal Caverns. Blacksmithing 150+ is recommended for this stage.
Combine in the Shawl Kit. Failures at this stage will destroy the combine materials but not the shawl itself — the shawl is always preserved if the combine fails on the tradeskill portion.
7th Shawl — Coldain Prayer Shawl
▶Stage seven is one of the most demanding tradeskill stages, requiring Jewelcrafting at a high level. The jewel component needed may require farming specific gems from Velious raid content.
High-quality gems drop from named mobs in Kael Drakkel, Velketor's Labyrinth, and the Temple of Veeshan. You may need guild assistance to acquire these efficiently.
This combine has a high trivial. A failure here destroys the gems. Have backup materials prepared or wait until your Jewelcrafting is high enough to minimize failure risk.
Hand the completed combine to Grenwald along with the 6th shawl. The 7th shawl is already a significant upgrade with notable stats.
8th Shawl — Coldain Prayer Shawl (Final)
▶The final shawl requires both high-level tradeskill work and involvement in the Coldain Ring War event. You must obtain a blessed item from a Coldain ring war stage and combine it with the 7th shawl.
The 8th shawl requires an item associated with the Ring War quest (see the Ring War guide). Coordinate with your guild to obtain this component.
This final combine typically requires Jewelcrafting or Blacksmithing at or near 250 (skill cap). The resulting 8th Coldain Prayer Shawl has excellent stats for all classes and a powerful clicky spell effect.
Reward: The 8th Coldain Prayer Shawl — one of the best cloaks in the Velious era, with high all-stats, HP/Mana, and a clicky effect usable by all classes.
Tips & Notes
- Work on your tradeskills in parallel with the shawl progression. Each stage's tradeskill trivial is higher than the last.
- Tradeskill failures on the intermediate crafts (before the Shawl Kit combine) are frustrating but only cost materials. The shawl itself is never lost from a failed Kit combine.
- Coldain faction is required throughout this quest. If you have been killing Coldain NPCs, you may need to faction grind (killing Coldain enemies such as giants in Kael) before certain NPCs will assist you.
- The 8th shawl is a major achievement — it is worth prioritizing if your class makes strong use of the cloak slot.
