One of the best rings available in the Velious era. Awarded after successfully defending Thurgadin in the Ring War event and turning in Narandi's Head + Ring 9 to Seneschal Aldikar during the event. Can then be shown to Dain Frostreaver IV for additional rewards (Protection of the Dain earring).

Overview

The Coldain Ring War is one of EverQuest's most iconic quest progressions. Starting in the Eastern Wastes with Garadain Glacierbane, the ten-ring chain progresses through crafting, escort quests, NPC battles, and espionage before culminating in a massive raid-scale battle defending Thurgadin against a Kromrif invasion. The final reward — the Ring of Dain Frostreaver IV — is a powerful all-class ring with AC 10, STR 10, STA 10, HP 100, MR 10, and a right-click effect.

Rings 1 through 8 are quested entirely through Garadain Glacierbane in the Eastern Wastes. Ring 9 is awarded by Dain Frostreaver IV in Thurgadin after completing the traitor quest line initiated by Seneschal Aldikar. Ring 10 requires the full Ring War event with a raid-sized force.

All rings are No Drop and MAGIC ITEM LORE ITEM. You must turn in your current ring to receive the next ring in the chain. Rings are also useful items in their own right, growing in power at each tier.

Speak with Garadain Glacierbane in Eastern Wastes

Garadain Glacierbane is at the Coldain camp in Eastern Wastes. Hail him, then follow the keywords: friend -> tired -> blanket. He explains that a blizzard blew away his hunting blanket made of "the finest tundra kodiak hides and snow panther skins, two of each."

Craft a Coldain Hunting Blanket (Tailoring)

Combine the following in a Sewing Kit (Tailoring):

  • 2x High Quality Tundra Kodiak Pelt — dropped by tundra kodiaks in Eastern Wastes
  • 2x High Quality Cougarskin — dropped by snow cougars in Eastern Wastes

This creates the Coldain Hunting Blanket.

Turn in the Coldain Hunting Blanket to Garadain

Give the Coldain Hunting Blanket to Garadain Glacierbane. He rewards you with the Copper Coldain Insignia Ring and mentions his nephew has disappeared again. Ask about his nephew to start Ring 2.

Ring 2 — Silver Coldain Insignia Ring

Ask Garadain about his nephew, then about the beast, then offer assistance

Follow keywords: nephew -> beast -> assistance. Garadain explains that his nephew Boridain keeps running away to hunt a Rabid Tundra Kodiak. He gives you a Dull Bladed Axe to deliver to Boridain.

Find Boridain Glacierbane in Eastern Wastes and give him the Dull Bladed Axe

Boridain roams the Eastern Wastes. Give him the Dull Bladed Axe. He begins tracking prey and eventually a Rabid Tundra Kodiak spawns. Kill the kodiak — it drops a Rabid Kodiak Skin. Boridain then takes the skin and gives you a Broken Axe as proof.

Turn in Copper Coldain Insignia Ring + Broken Axe to Garadain

Give Ring 1 (Copper Coldain Insignia Ring) and the Broken Axe to Garadain. He confirms his nephew is safe and rewards you with the Silver Coldain Insignia Ring. Ask about hunting to start Ring 3.

The Hunting Knife — NPC: Garadain Glacierbane

Ask Garadain about hunting, then slow, then knife

Follow keywords: hunting -> slow -> knife. Garadain's hunting knife has lost its edge and he needs a new one. He tells you: "Hunt a wooly rhino and take his horn, then take a flawless hide from a walrus. Combine them in a forge with a skinning rock and bring me the new knife and the silver insignia ring."

Craft a Coldain Hunting Knife (Smithing)

Combine the following in a Forge (Smithing):

  • 1x Wooly Rhino Horn — dropped by wooly rhinos in Eastern Wastes
  • 1x High Quality Walrus Hide — dropped by walruses in Eastern Wastes
  • 1x Skinning Rock — a ground spawn in Eastern Wastes (or use the stationary Skinning Rock object)

This creates the Coldain Hunting Knife.

Turn in Silver Coldain Insignia Ring + Coldain Hunting Knife to Garadain

Give Ring 2 (Silver Coldain Insignia Ring) and the Coldain Hunting Knife to Garadain. He says the knife needs work and will need a Coldain Smithing Hammer to fix it. He rewards you with the Gold Coldain Insignia Ring. Ask about smithing hammer to start Ring 4.

Ring 4 — Platinum Coldain Insignia Ring

Rescuing Tain Hammerfrost — NPC: Garadain Glacierbane

Ask Garadain about the smithing hammer

Say smithing hammer to Garadain. He says Tain Hammerfrost can get you one and gives you a Note to Tain. Ask about Tain and Garadain says he "left a short time ago, he said he had a score to settle with a particular Kromriff."

Find Tain Hammerfrost in Eastern Wastes, defend him from the ambush

Tain Hammerfrost roams the Eastern Wastes. When you find him, he is passed out. Hail him and say help — this spawns Ghrek Squatnot (a Kromrif) and 3 frost giants who attack. Kill all the attackers to save Tain. Loot a Frozen Elixir from Ghrek Squatnot. Give the Frozen Elixir to Tain Hammerfrost — he rewards you with the Coldain Smithing Hammer. A group is recommended for this fight.

Turn in Coldain Smithing Hammer + Gold Coldain Insignia Ring to Garadain

Give Ring 3 (Gold Coldain Insignia Ring) and the Coldain Smithing Hammer to Garadain. He rewards you with the Platinum Coldain Insignia Ring. Ask about plans to start Ring 5.

Ask Garadain about plans, then orders

Follow keywords: plans -> orders. Garadain reveals that the Ry'Gorr orcs, allies of the frost giants, plan to raid the Coldain camp. Their captain, Scarbrow Ga'Hruk, is leading the assault. He tells you to find the Ry'Gorr messenger, kill him for the Rygorr Invasion Plans, and deliver them to his lookout.

A Ry'Gorr messenger roams Eastern Wastes. Kill it and loot the Rygorr Invasion Plans.

Give the Rygorr Invasion Plans to a Coldain Lookout near camp

Give the Rygorr Invasion Plans to a coldain lookout stationed near the Coldain camp. This triggers the Ry'Gorr attack — Scarbrow Ga'Hruk spawns along with 2 Ry'Gorr oracles and 3 Ry'Gorr invaders. Kill Scarbrow and loot the Head of Scarbrow.

Turn in Head of Scarbrow + Platinum Coldain Insignia Ring to Garadain

Give Ring 4 (Platinum Coldain Insignia Ring) and the Head of Scarbrow to Garadain. He rewards you with the Obsidian Coldain Insignia Ring. Ask about favor to start Ring 6.

Ask Garadain about the favor

Say favor to Garadain. He describes an unsolved mystery: an elite team of Coldain and their trained wolves were gathered to strike at the Kromrif, but no one knows what became of them. He asks you to bring proof of their fate and proof that whoever was responsible is no more.

Find Korrigain (ghost of the slain team leader) in Eastern Wastes

Find Korrigain, the ghost of the slain Coldain team leader, in the Eastern Wastes. Hail him and hand him the Obsidian Coldain Insignia Ring to prove you are a friend. He tells the story of the massacre: Ry'Gorr oracles charmed their trained wolves, which then turned on their masters. He returns the ring and sends his loyal ghost wolf Icefang to lead you to the killers. Follow Icefang — he leads you to Poxbreath Yellowfang and 3 oracles of Ry'Gorr. Kill Poxbreath and loot the Note from Kromrif.

Obtain Rodrick's Head from the spy encounter

Separately, you need Rodrick's Head. A Ry'Gorr Emissary patrols the Eastern Wastes and periodically meets with the Coldain traitor Rodrick Tardok. They have a scripted conversation about the Kromrif plot against the Dain — the emissary promises Rodrick the throne once the Dain is overthrown. Kill Rodrick Tardok and loot Rodrick's Head. (Note: Rodrick spawns on a timer during the emissary's patrol and will despawn if not killed quickly.)

Turn in Rodrick's Head + Note from Kromrif + Obsidian Coldain Insignia Ring to Garadain

Give Ring 5 (Obsidian Coldain Insignia Ring), Rodrick's Head, and the Note from Kromrif to Garadain. He bows his head and vows the Ry'Gorr will pay. He rewards you with the Mithril Coldain Insignia Ring. Ask about mission to start Ring 7.

Ring 7 — Adamantium Coldain Insignia Ring

Rescuing Corbin Blackwell — NPC: Garadain Glacierbane

Reward: Adamantium Coldain Insignia Ring — AC 7, STR 7, MR 7

Ask Garadain about the mission

Say mission to Garadain. He explains that a very important Coldain, Corbin Blackwell, has been abducted by the Ry'Gorr. Corbin was gathering intelligence critical to the Coldain's victory. You must find him before he is killed and escort him to safety. First, kill Warden Bruke (a Ry'Gorr orc in Eastern Wastes near where Corbin is held) and loot the Shackle Key.

Give Shackle Key + Mithril Ring to Corbin, then escort him to Dobbin's camp

Give Corbin the Shackle Key and your Mithril Coldain Insignia Ring (Ring 6). He returns Ring 6, frees himself, and begins walking toward the Coldain camp. Escort him — along the way, Commander Bahreck, multiple Ry'Gorr Bashers, and Kromrif Soldiers ambush you. Kill them and keep Corbin alive. He eventually reaches Dobbin Crossaxe at the Coldain camp. Dobbin says: "Please friend, show me your Mithril ring and I will show you our gratitude." Give your Mithril Coldain Insignia Ring (Ring 6) to Dobbin Crossaxe. He gives you a Note from Corbin to bring back to Garadain.

Turn in the Note from Corbin to Garadain

Give the Note from Corbin to Garadain. He rewards you with the Adamantium Coldain Insignia Ring and declares it is time for war against the Ry'Gorr. Tell him when you are ready to start Ring 8.

Ring 8 — Velium Coldain Insignia Ring

The Ry'Gorr Keep Assault — NPC: Garadain Glacierbane

Reward: Velium Coldain Insignia Ring — AC 8, STR 8, MR 8 (with click effect)

Zone: Eastern Wastes — Group required

Give Garadain the Adamantium Coldain Insignia Ring and say you are ready

Say ready to Garadain. He warns: "Give me the Adamantite ring and I will give you the marching orders. I must warn you, I will hold your ring until the head of Chief Ry'gorr is given to me. If we fail, all will be lost... for both of us." Give him Ring 7 (Adamantium Coldain Insignia Ring). He gives you Marching Orders.

Give the Marching Orders to Gloradin Coldheart in the next hut

Gloradin Coldheart is in a nearby hut at the Coldain camp. Give her the Marching Orders. This spawns Garadain as a mobile NPC who begins marching toward the Ry'Gorr keep with Coldain soldiers. Follow him closely.

Follow Garadain and defeat the Ry'Gorr, including Chief Ry'Gorr

Garadain leads the assault on the Ry'Gorr Keep. Along the march, waves of enemies spawn including Firbrand the Black, Oracle of Ry'Gorr, Kromrif Commanders, Kromrif Soldiers, and multiple Ry'Gorr Oracles. Your primary target is Chief Ry'Gorr. Keep Garadain alive through the entire battle. Kill Chief Ry'Gorr and loot his Head of Chief Ry'Gorr.

Turn in the Head of Chief Ry'Gorr to Garadain

Give the Head of Chief Ry'Gorr to Garadain. He congratulates you and returns your ring, upgraded to the Velium Coldain Insignia Ring. He tells you to show it to the Seneschal in Thurgadin.

Ring 9 — Coldain Hero's Insignia Ring

The Traitor Quest — NPC: Seneschal Aldikar / Dain Frostreaver IV

Reward: Coldain Hero's Insignia Ring — AC 9, STR 9, STA 9, MR 9, HP 50 (with click effect)

Zone: Thurgadin (Icewell Keep) / Great Divide — Group/Raid recommended

Show the Velium Coldain Insignia Ring to Seneschal Aldikar in Thurgadin

Travel to Thurgadin (Icewell Keep) and find Seneschal Aldikar while the royal court is in session. Give him your Velium Coldain Insignia Ring (Ring 8). He is impressed and leads you to a private room, where he reveals that Rodrick was not alone in his treachery — there is a faction of Coldain who want to sign a treaty with the Kromrif. He asks if you will accept this task of flushing out the traitors.

Say "accept this task" to receive the Traitors Bane Box

Say accept this task to Seneschal Aldikar. He gives you a Traitors Bane Box (a 6-slot container). He instructs you: "In this box, place the accursed dirk of the fallen Rodrick. With it combine the heads of every traitor you dispose of. When this is done give the box and the velium insignia ring to the Dain directly."

Find and kill the traitors, obtain all required items

You must hunt down the traitors scattered throughout Thurgadin and other Velious zones. Talk to citizens and investigate the councilors in the Dain's court to uncover leads. Kill the traitors and collect their heads. You also need the Dirk of the Traitor (which drops from Rodrick Tardok during the Ring 6 spy encounter — if you didn't save it, you'll need to redo that encounter). Place the dirk and all traitor heads inside the Traitors Bane Box and combine to create a Box of the Guilty.

Turn in Box of the Guilty + Velium Coldain Insignia Ring to Dain Frostreaver IV

Give the Box of the Guilty and your Velium Coldain Insignia Ring (Ring 8) to Dain Frostreaver IV in Icewell Keep. He thanks you and rewards you with the Coldain Hero's Insignia Ring (Ring 9) and the Dirk of the Dain (a cleansed version of the traitor's blade: 9/20, AGI 5, DEX 5, STR 5, +10 Poison Resist, proc effect).

Ring 10 — The Coldain Ring War

The Ring War Event — NPC: Sentry Badain / Seneschal Aldikar

Reward: Ring of Dain Frostreaver IV — AC 10, STR 10, STA 10, MR 10, HP 100 (with click effect)

Zone: Great Divide — Raid required

The Ring War is a massive multi-wave battle in the Great Divide where the Coldain defend against a Kromrif invasion force. You command Coldain army units and must defeat 20 waves of attackers culminating in the boss Narandi the Wretched.

Speak with Dain Frostreaver IV to initiate

Show the Dirk of the Dain to the Dain. He tells you the Kromrif are planning to attack in Thurgadin's weakest hour. Say count on my help. He gives you a Declaration of War and tells you to give it along with the ninth ring to Sentry Badain outside the city in Great Divide.

Assemble your raid force in Great Divide near Thurgadin

Gather a full raid force in Great Divide near the Thurgadin entrance. You will be commanding Coldain army divisions. Assign players to support each Coldain commander's position.

Give Declaration of War + Coldain Hero's Insignia Ring to Sentry Badain

Give the Declaration of War and Coldain Hero's Insignia Ring (Ring 9) to Sentry Badain. He leads you to the Seneschal's command post where the Coldain commanders are briefed. The Seneschal introduces you to the five commanders:

  • Garadain — posts his men in the gorge to the east
  • Churn — awaits your command in the caves to the west
  • Dobbin — forces stationed in the clearing directly south near the towers
  • Corbin — hides his men in the worm caves to the south for surprise attacks
  • Kargin — bowmen on the hill to the west
Show Ring 9 to Seneschal Aldikar, receive Orders of Engagement

Give Ring 9 to the Seneschal to verify your identity. He returns Ring 9 and gives you Orders of Engagement. Give the Orders to Scout Zrelik — he becomes your herald who follows you and relays orders to the troops. The Seneschal then begins his speech and the troops take up positions.

Defend through 20 waves of Kromrif attackers

The Ring War consists of 20 waves of Kromrif attackers approaching from different directions. You command the Coldain troops by speaking to Scout Zrelik:

  • "Garadain to my side" — calls Garadain's forces to your location
  • "Dobbin assist me" — calls Dobbin's forces
  • "Churn protect me" — calls Churn's forces
  • "Corbin attack" — calls Corbin's forces for a surprise attack
  • "For the Dain, attack" — calls ALL Coldain forces to you
  • "The Kromrif are attacking" — signals the next wave early

Critical: The Seneschal Aldikar must survive. If he falls, all is lost. Keep dedicated healers on him at all times. Surviving Coldain commanders earn you bonus loot at the end.

Defeat Narandi the Wretched (Wave 20 boss)

Wave 20 spawns Narandi the Wretched, the commander of the Kromrif invasion. He is extremely powerful — "more powerful than any ten of his peers." Kill him and loot Narandi's Head.

Turn in Narandi's Head + Ring 9 to Seneschal Aldikar

Give Narandi's Head and the Coldain Hero's Insignia Ring (Ring 9) to the Seneschal Aldikar (post-battle version). He shaves the beard from Narandi's face for the Dain's trophy room and rewards you with the Ring of Dain Frostreaver IV and the Shorn Head of Narandi.

Show the Shorn Head to surviving commanders for bonus loot

Show the Shorn Head of Narandi to each surviving Coldain commander for additional rewards:

  • Churn — pries the Crown of Narandi from the head (head slot)
  • Corbin — unhooks the Earring of the Frozen Skull from the head (ear slot)
  • Dobbin — recovers the Faceguard of Bentos the Hero (face slot)
  • Garadain — removes the Choker of the Wretched (neck slot)
  • Kargin — knocks out the Eye of Narandi (ranged slot)

Each of the five commanders that survived the battle provides a unique item. The more commanders alive at the end, the more bonus loot you receive.

Show Ring 10 to Dain Frostreaver IV for Protection of the Dain

Return to Thurgadin and give the Ring of Dain Frostreaver IV to Dain Frostreaver IV while you are at ally faction or better. He returns the ring and also rewards you with the Protection of the Dain (an earring with a clickable buff). He warns that if you ever fall from his good graces, he will keep the ring.
